Hi Erika, what are your English non-negotiables?
Hi Erika,
How are you?
This week in the Eigo Techo
This Friday’s word is ‘transformation’ (変革). If you really want transformation in your English ability, you need to decide on your non-negotiables (絶対に欠かせないこと) for English study.
This week's English Tip
I believe the following should be non-negotiable if you really want to improve your English.
1. Speak English Every Day – Even If It’s Just to Yourself Why? Because fluency comes from using English, not just studying it.
2. Listen to Natural English Daily - without subtitles! Try different accents, podcasts, news, audiobooks and so on. Why? Real English is fast and messy, you need to train your ears to hear it.
3. Learn Vocabulary in Context - Not just word lists. That’s why the Eigo Techo has monthly topics. Why? Knowing random, unrelated words is not enough. You need to know how and when to use them.
4. Be Consistent - a little every day is better than a lot once a week. Why? Fluency comes from daily practice, not from a little practice here and there.
How about you? What are your non-negotiables for English study?
This week in my life in Oz
March 21st (last Friday) is "Harmony Day" in Australia. Harmony Day celebrates cultural diversity and promotes inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for everyone.
The 'color' for Harmony Day is orange. Orange is used in Australia because it symbolizes social communication, meaningful conversations, freedom of ideas, and mutual respect.
At offices and schools, people are encouraged to wear orange and many places hold events that promote cultural diversity. My daughter's elementary school had a 'wear something orange' event last Friday (instead of school uniform), so she chose her "Peace Love Harmony" T-shirt.
Is there anything like Harmony Day in Japan?
See you next Wednesday!
All my best,
Chris
